A Complete Service, from the ground up

We can offer to build most types of models and specialise in providing “custom” built model railway layouts. We say:-

“A satisfying railway requires several essential aspects to be correct. The plan has to be sensible so that stations, goods yards, open areas and populated sections have a purpose and are logically connected. The track design must allow smooth running of rolling stock and should accommodate realistic movements to conform to prototype practice as far as possible, while allowing the maximum potential for interesting operation. Scenic additions must blend into the general design and accentuate the “spread” of the layout, as it is very rare to have sufficient space to build a layout that is not slightly cramped in some respects. The control system should be comprehensive, simple to operate and should incorporate a measure of safety interlock, which ideally would be “transparent” to the operators.”

Why choose us?

Magrathean Models has this to say about us:-

“Not only do we build models but we dispense information. If you have a problem concerning modelling, we will always endeavour to offer advice and help. We have gained experience in many fields of modelling over the years and can usually find a solution to most problems.”

Chris and David are the partners in the business; Chris, like his Father, has always been interested in modelling and son David has followed the trend. Chris grew up with Meccano, very second hand 0 gauge trains, polystyrene and balsa aeroplanes and Dinky Toy cars. David grew up with Lego, 00 gauge trains, Corgy cars, computers and radio controlled competitive cars. Many model projects have been built over the years ranging from a futuristic car and caravan combo with ALL the fitments, working of course, to a 9 channel radio controlled articulated truck, again with everything operational. The family layout, now christened “Fiveways” was started before David and has grown into a proving ground for modelling difficulties:- if there is a problem you can’t solve, look to Fiveways for an answer, whether it involves planning, track, control, gradients, automatic signalling or rolling stock, somewhere on the layout is a problem like yours that has been solved and we will tell you about it! Chris has much experience of planning and designing as he worked in the shopfitting industry for 30 years, integrating carpentry, metalwork, engineering and electronics to design equipment and solve problems. David showed versatility from an early age, now has a degree in computer skills, is quick at assessing the situation and has the ability to apply logic to problems that do not look like logic problems! He applied knowledge of model railways to his final year university project in the form of an N gauge demonstration layout using computer programming for control. Prior to university life, his major hobby was competitive radio controlled model car racing. Becoming Champion of the local club in 1989, awarded National Junior Stock Car Champion in 1991, and winning at meetings over the whole country for many years, he demonstrated exceptional modelling skills in setting up and maintaining his racing cars to the highest standards.
We “do” railways, but we can do so much more. Ask and you will find just how much we can offer.
